blog embarrassment

I can't believe it's nearing the end of August and I haven't tended to this here blog in nearly two months. Summer. Wow. I'm so sorry! For some reason, my procrastinating tendencies really pop up when it comes to blogging. Here's hoping there are 2 posts a month till the end of the year. If you put it out there....

Anyway - summer has been wonderful. I've been to California TWICE! Utah to help the lovely, talented Sarah Winward with a mega monster event. Sag Harbor almost every week to kick it with all kinds of Lubells (including the most wonderful + cutest niece and nephews). There have been train rides up coasts, long drives in serene places, countless ocean swims, so much good food, a million beautiful flowers, cold wine, cold beer, more flowers, plenty of zipcars, and even more rides in the convertible. It's been a pretty darn good summer. And it's not over yet! Gonna hold onto every little morsel it's got.

spring haze

There's plenty to catch up on here. Spring is happening. With fury. I haven't slept much, been drinking too many earlyyyyyyy morning Starbucks, (it's the ONLY coffee place near me open before 7am - don't judge) been lifting a lot of heavy crap, running around town, driving to Montauk, East Hampton, New Jersey, Dix Hills, on repeat. A lot. Wedding season. It's so funny. We emerge from the winter slumber and turn into the most highly productive, caffeinated, amped, excited flower people. I both dread and live for this shit. When you're in it, you feel like you can do anything. Sometimes I think if someone caught me at the right moment, I'd be able to make an urn arrangement and perform surgery in the same hour. Exaggeration? You get the idea. So... there are lots of pretty images to catch you up on, but let's start with the last couple days first.

spring shizzle

Ok - here we go. Trees are blossoming, emails are flowing, flowers are being ordered, vases are being sourced. It's the beginning!! Local product is starting to kick in with a fury and everyone is feeling genuinely pumped about flower time. Kicked off our season with some cherry blossom madness at the University club last weekend. I had the best team and am so thankful to have such amazing help.

disposable cameras and my love of the beach

I've had a solid winter. I fled the cold, bundled up streets of Brooklyn for 2 weeks of hot, wonderful sun, postcard sunsets, surfing, yoga, bougainvillea in EVERY color, and really good friends. This magical land of Costa Rica has become my safe haven and home away from home. To say I love it there is a gross understatement. I LOVE IT THERE.

Our uniforms are bikinis, shorts and bare feet. We walk around with surf boars on our sides. We drink millions of smoothies. We practice lots of yoga in the jungle hills. We have beautiful friends there. They take us places that make us giggle with joy. We have fun. Pure fun.

Life is simple there. Not simplistic - just simple. And it feels awesome. I go back as frequently as I can, and each year I stay a little longer. I'm starting to think big*. Because - why not? Here - take a look, won't you...

Two weeks after I got home, I went to Maui to hang with the lovely, wonderful Ariella during her flower workshop. Like I said - solid winter.

*So, there's this place for sale there....

flowerrrrrssssss

Valentine's came and went. Had fun hanging at a barber shop with T-Dawg drinking rose cava and stuffing ourselves with cheese. We made a lot of boyfriends look good.

I've never dated anyone that's given me flowers on Valentine's Day. Isn't that the craziest thing? Too much pressure, I guess. But it's so obvious! Dudes. They are confusing, simple beasts.

I got back from Costa Rica three days before Valentine's day. On a surf board one morning and the flower market the next. Such a bizarre transition.

So I was thinking, I may just do a pop up in CR next year. Hibiscus, bougainvillea bouquets, couple's yoga, and coconut ice cream packages. Set up a little stand by my friend's surf shop and then hit the waves. What's funny is - I'm probably not joking. Pura Vida. :)

making meetings

It's a funny time of year. Spending more time in front of the computer than in front of a work table. Making meetings, taking meetings, having meetings about other meetings - at the studio, at coffee shops, if i'm lucky - at a bar with decent wine. The process. So many steps.

When I sit with people and talk to them about their flowers, I paint a picture in my head. The colors, the season, the venue, the people - it all kind of comes together helping me figure out what their flowers, tables, etc. are going to look like. Turning those images into language and articulating those imaginations are quite complex. It's fun when it's effortless. Yet sometimes it's rather challenging to take something so purely visual and explain it.

I suppose that's what all these meetings are about. Convincing, explaining, soliciting trust. Using words and some photos to help people get inside my own head, and dump the images I see, artfully, into their heads. I had a fun break from meetings to make some arrangements today. Caught the light, chased it, and got a few photos with my BRAND NEW LENS. Money solves all problems. wink wink.

**oh, this happened a couple weeks ago. bonkers.
